Milktooth, an indie studio from the UK, has dropped the first demo for Bad Magpie on Steam and Xbox for PC. The premise is quite amusing, as you’ll be playing as a tiny menace of a bird who steals shiny objects to impress a fallen star.

The Bad Magpie demo is out as part of LudoNarraCon, the annual festival celebrating storytelling through games. The full release planned for 2027 on Steam and Xbox Series X|S. It’ll also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

So, in Bad Magpie, you play as a magpie with one wing, a missing flock, and a rather concerning obsession with a fallen star. The star wants shiny trinkets, the magpie wants the star’s affection, and neither seems particularly interested in discussing the emotional implications of this arrangement.

Bad Magpie gives you a small, densely packed, non-linear open world where everything looks like it deserves a good pecking. You can steal things, combine objects, and meddle with the environment. You can’t fly because you’ve only got one wing, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck on the ground all the time. Burning a meadow, draining a swimming pool, and writing off a car are all ways to get around or make progress.

The game’s cartoon logic is also wonderfully daft. Fancy shattering glass? Try screeching into a megaphone. Need to start a fire? Have a go at pecking some flint. Curious about what happens when you drop an apple into oil? Well, there’s only one way to find out!

You can tear through the environment in a fit of feathered rage, or take your time exploring every corner. The game rewards curiosity, and its puzzles can have multiple solutions, most of them intentionally designed rather than accidental exploits.

Interestingly, Bad Magpie doesn’t rely on dialogue, written text, or cutscenes to tell its story in the full game. Everything is communicated through gameplay, although the devs call it a narrative adventure. The world itself is supposed to do the talking, with its handcrafted environments, reactive details, and little interactions.

But the Bad Magpie demo makes a small exception

The demo has added a few lines of text before and after the gameplay to help establish the scene. It’s a bit of a teaser for how the full experience will handle its storytelling without spelling everything out for you.

The Bad Magpie demo drops you into a corner of one of the three areas that make up its colourful, chaotic world. Your main objective is to hunt down meteorite shards scattered across the map. The demo is available now on Steam and Xbox for PC.
