Is the life of a doll fun? Well, you’ll get to know in Prison of Husks, which is bringing its creepy little afterlife to PC and consoles early next year. It’s a single-player souls-like inspired by early PlayStation classics, where you’ll fight lovelorn bosses and search for your lost love.

So, the game arrives on Steam and PlayStation 5 on January 27th, 2027. British-Indonesian developer Tammy Morley, head of Glass Head Dolls, revealed the release date during the triple-i initiative showcase. The team dropped a release date trailer as well; watch it right here!

Prison of Husks takes place in a painted afterlife called Lysiane

You wake up as a doll in what was a heavenly place, painted by a pure heart. But you discover that the whole landscape has become a haunting, desolate mess that’s slowly crumbling beneath your feet. Your soul has found a new vessel, but that doesn’t exactly mean you’ve landed on your feet.

The premise has a bittersweet, melancholic feeling. You’ll be dealing with all sorts of vicious enemies, including cunning dolls and decaying pigment beasts. There are plenty of unfulfilled desires hanging around to make the place even more unsettling. Simultaneously, you’ll also have opportunities to help kind souls soothe their aching hearts as you explore.

Fighting enemies lets you ignite the flame within and build up adrenaline to increase your damage. You’ll also need to get your parries right, using precise timing to deflect attacks and create openings to strike back. There are different items and weapons throughout the world, with options ranging from pistols to magic. You can customise your doll, with equipment ranging from blades to brooches.

Prison of Husks doesn’t have a levelling system. When you die, you don’t get to solve all your problems by grinding. Instead, you’ll have to get back up and try something different. It takes inspiration from the complex level design of earlier souls games.

And that wraps up our scoop on Prison of Husks. If you’re looking for a new game, read our scoop on Beat, Heart, Beat, a 2.5D Psychedelic Rhythm Action-Platformer.
