If the forest is this enchanting, then take me there immediately. And I don’t even mind getting lost in it! I’m talking about Nomori (which translates to ‘of the forest’ in Japanese), a new adventure puzzle game. It just hands you control over time and space, and you have to figure out what the hell to do with them.
Nomori takes place in a colourful fantasy world
It’s full of strange little Spirits, floating islands, portals, changing gravity, and enough reality-bending moments. You play as Kiko, a curious girl who ends up stuck in the spirit world of Nomori after going into a forest during her summer holidays while staying at her grandma’s.
It isn’t a normal trip into the woods because Nomori is made up of numerous floating islands, and Kiko has to work her way through them. A brain-melting experience, the game throws gravity, time and perspective into the puzzles.
You can place, shift and rotate portals, and they don’t just teleport you from one spot to another. They can completely change the direction of gravity for both Kiko and objects around her. Every surface can become a floor.
There are four seasonal domains and 40+ islands in Nomori, which are heavily inspired by Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher’s creations. Most of his woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints were inspired by mathematics, and so are the puzzles in this game. All that wrapped up in a Japanese folklore-inspired story.
There’s also a little marker you can place yourself, and that marker can be seen through walls too. That’s particularly useful for figuring out which direction is actually up. The actual stages are separate puzzles that mix light platforming with puzzle solving. The main goal is to reach a gate that unlocks the next island.
