Nulphia is an upcoming title that will immediately give you the old-school Zelda-ish vibe. But it’s doing a bunch of its own stuff with physics and exploration. Solo developer Kirill Poletaev, aka Keyreal, has released the first public Steam demo for Nulphia. This is Keyreal’s 6th commercial release on Steam.
It’s a top-down action-adventure
Nulphia is inspired by games like The Legend of Zelda, Alundra, Ys, and The Legend of Oasis. It’s a retro-style adventure and mixes the classic adventure style with more modern design, particularly when it comes to how the world is laid out and how you move through it.
The setting is a vibrant island called Nulphia, and it’s non-linear. You open up more of the world as you get new abilities, equipment, shortcuts and tools, with different locations connected together. There are colourful landscapes, ancient ruins, environmental puzzles and hidden treasures scattered around the island.
And the story goes like this: Nulphia was once home to a powerful kingdom. But that kingdom has been reduced to a shadow of what it used to be after a battle between wizards ravaged the land centuries ago. Now the ghosts of that past are starting to resurface after a very long sleep, and a dark threat is hanging over Nulphia again.
You play as a young adventurer being haunted by strange dreams. He eventually discovers a hidden tomb, which kicks off a chain of events that’s been building for centuries. A restless spirit guides him toward a faraway land, and he heads off without knowing what kind of fate is waiting for him.
The Nulphia demo is pretty substantial
It covers the first chapter of the full game and gives you around 2-3 hours of gameplay. One of the first places you’ll visit is Qual Harbor, a small port town and the first settlement in Nulphia. The demo also supports controllers and Steam Deck, and you can play it in either English or Russian.
