Everdeep Studios has released its solo-developed first-person psychological horror game Liminal Shroud for PC. The game is set inside a place called the Shroud, where reality has apparently decided to stop behaving normally.

You wander through surreal, strangely familiar environments inspired by liminal spaces, nostalgia, dreamlike architecture, and internet lore. The horror comes from the environment, the sound, and the fact that you’re constantly wondering what the hell is actually happening.

Liminal Shroud is all about exploring handcrafted environments, finding hidden paths, interacting with objects, and solving visual puzzles. There’s no traditional text-based puzzle system. So, all you have to do is pay attention and notice things that might otherwise look completely ordinary.

The environments are completely original and handcrafted, with a visual style influenced by the 1970s and 80s. There’s dated carpet, walls coated in lead paint, faded furniture, heavy curtains, flickering lights, endless hallways, and rooms that seem to stack into each other in ways that really shouldn’t be possible. Liminal Shroud has an analogue horror aesthetic

It takes inspiration from internet lore such as The Backrooms and The Thompson Extension, while still trying to make its own strange little version of the genre. And while there aren’t physical monsters hunting you down, there still is an inescapable dark presence watching your every move.

The story is also hidden throughout the environments themselves. You’ll find fragments of it through architecture and audio, through some really unsettling soundscapes. The full game has 10 chapters, and the interface is kept simple and minimal.

Liminal Shroud has a lot of cool features, too. It lets you fully remap the key bindings, use a gamepad, adjust camera sensitivity, toggle head bob, change brightness, and set the running or sprint key to either toggle or hold. There’s a camera FOV slider, and it supports windowed mode as well as overlay keyboards.

Liminal Shroud is now available on Steam and the Epic Games Store for $12.99. There’s also a 10% launch discount for a limited time.
