An extraction game where you have an entire volcano ruining your efforts. Isn’t that quite stressful and probably the type of challenge you’re looking for? Well, that’s Into the Fire for you, and the good news is that there’s a playtest available now.

Actually, this is the second round of public playtest for Into the Fire, and it’s part of the Steam PvE Survival Craft Festival. The upcoming title is from developer and publisher Starward Industries, the studio behind The Invincible.

The game takes place on an island devastated by a mysterious volcanic cataclysm. It mixes extraction mechanics with survival, crafting, exploration, base development, and rescue operations. The whole point is to save as many lives as possible, while also collecting resources and making it back to your Camp ‘safely’.

Every expedition is time-sensitive. Lava flows can change routes, ash storms can mess with visibility and conditions, and pyroclastic waves can completely alter what was previously a safe path. Every person and animal you manage to save has an effect on the settlement and its future.

The island isn’t just dealing with the natural destruction of an active volcano. Into the Fire mixes scientific phenomena with supernatural creatures and anomalies inspired by local legends and mythology. You’ll find mystical fire anomalies, forgotten rituals and unsettling stories.

What’s new in this playtest for Into the Fire?

It adds animal rescue, new gadgets and weapons. So, you can now bring animals back to your growing community, but you need to build them a proper shelter before rescuing them. Starward Industries has also expanded the quest structure with a proper Main Quest and added unique Area and Gate Quests.

Meanwhile, new equipment includes the Jetpack and Flamethrower. You can obtain them through the LAB quest. The Camp has gotten multiple quality-of-life improvements too, while performance, loading times, stamina and the crosshair have all been improved.

Into the Fire is currently in development for PC and will launch through Steam.
