Monks and books: the combination doesn’t sound chaotic at all, right? But wait until you see them together in Monk Took Book. You’ll find them in a cosy-creepy medieval library in the game. And it’s chaotic because this library is full of ghosts, fires, book thieves, vermin, and even Viking raiders.

The game is a co-op sim from indie dev duo SquarePlay Games. It’s their third game after Overcrowd: A Commute ‘Em Up and Space Trash Scavenger. They’re launching Monk Took Book for PC on September 3rd, 2026.

You and up to three other monks have to organize, stack, and remember where you put hundreds of books. It’s a weird but pretty clever mix of the increasingly popular tidy-up genre and a memory challenge inspired by Wilmot’s Warehouse.

Welcome to Holy Island!

It’s home to the greatest monastic library of the Dark Ages. As a novice, your job is to run the place and complete its Legendary Collection. Every morning, new books arrive. None of them has titles, either. They only have symbols or pictures on their covers.

You and your friends have to decide together how you want to organise everything. There’s no single correct system, either. You can use your own logic and come up with whatever arrangement makes sense to you.

Once the sun goes down, the Scribes start asking for specific books. This is where the memory part kicks in. You literally judge every book by its cover and build your own system around the pictures. And the toughest part is actually remembering that system.

During nighttime, the library gets attacked by vermin, spirits, beasts, and various other problems. You’ll have to defend your collection with daggers, crossbows, or the holy cross. If a book gets damaged, you can also pull out your trusty quill and repair it.

Monk Took Book is coming to PC through Steam on September 3rd, and it’ll cost under $10.
