If you’re a 90s kid, you probably know the result of mixing Looney Tunes and Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s Bubsy, and he’s back! The Sonic-inspired gameplay and the Looney Tunes-like characters are now out in a new avatar, Bubsy 4D.

Atari and indie studio Fabraz launched Bubsy 4D today as the first fully 3D adventure of the series since 1996. It’s out on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG for $19.99.

Thirty years later, the bobcat clone is back

A lot of the older Bubsy games were considered some of the most frustrating platformers ever made. Janky controls, unfair design, and constant one-hit deaths made players want to launch their controllers into orbit.

Now, Atari and indie studio Fabraz are trying really hard this time to convince everyone that this isn’t going to be another trainwreck. Fortunately, for them, people who’ve already played Bubsy 4D are saying that it’s actually good.

With Super Mario Odyssey-like gameplay, you run, jump, glide, roll, wall-claw and pounce off enemies. There’s even a ridiculous new hairball form where Bubsy puffs himself up and blasts around levels at high speed.

The Woolies are still obsessed with fleece, so they steal all the sheep from Earth. The sheep rebel against the Woolies and come back as deadly robot sheep called BaaBots. And they steal Bubsy’s prized Golden Fleece.

That’s when it hits Bubsy, and he travels across alien planets to get the Golden Fleece back from the BaaBots. The levels have a heavy arts-and-crafts aesthetic with fabric-themed environments and giant colourful worlds. Every planet ends with a BaaBot boss fight, too.

Bubsy really delivers in this 4D avatar. You can check the game out on your preferred platform. And catch a glimpse of the game before you go.
