Have you played the 2022 point-and-click game Perfect Tides? If you have, you’ll be happy to know that its sequel has landed on Switch! The first game followed an aspiring Mara on a semi-isolated island. And Perfect Tides: Station to Station continues her story as an 18-year-old college freshman navigating the complexities of the city.

Even though it’s a sequel, you don’t actually need to play the first one to get into it. The Perfect Tides titles are made by Three Bees, the studio banner of Meredith Gran. Before the games, she published the webcomic Octopus Pie, which ran for 10 years.

Tackle the Perfect Tides: Station to Station

The game is about young adulthood and all the momentum and emotional whiplash that comes with it. You play as 18-year-old Mara in the year 2003 after she leaves home and starts figuring out life in the big city.

It includes fumbling through complicated relationships, trying to become a writer, and getting overwhelmed by existence. You collect objects, and also ideas, memories, names, and conversation topics that help shape Mara’s understanding of the world.

There are more than 60 environments to explore. All of them are connected through the city’s public mass transit system. Perfect Tides: Station to Station is split into seasonal acts and follows a full year of Mara’s life with branching outcomes and non-linear exploration.

You can build friendships, romantic relationships, explore rooms, and interact with people. You stumble through early adulthood while trying to figure out where you belong. The game’s writing is its strongest suit, just like the prequel.

Both Perfect Tides games present the theme that life is worth all the vulnerability and risk. Mara screws up constantly, makes bad decisions, misunderstands people, and gets misunderstood herself. But it all teaches us how human connection still matters despite all that messiness.

Perfect Tides: Station to Station is now available on Steam for PC and Nintendo Switch.
