Yep, we’ve scoured through Steam and found yet another exciting upcoming indie release. It’s called Citadel and is coming from solo developer Liam Atkinson. While the full release is planned for Q3 2026, you can now try a small slice of it through the new Steam demo.
A philosophical science-fiction visual novel and adventure game, Citadel starts in a pretty unusual way. If big philosophical questions excite you, or should I say intrigue you more than traditional gameplay, then this one is for you!
The player wakes up suspended in a warm, primordial soup with no idea who they are or where they are. After breaking free from this strange watery beginning, the character finds themselves in a secluded valley where there are no signs of life at all.
From there, a path stretches forward, leading toward three mysterious buildings and a massive, looming tower known as the Citadel. In search of answers, you travel through a journey that involves difficult choices and some harsh truths as well.
The title explores themes like identity, morality and existential discovery. It mixes speculative fiction ideas with a reflective narrative style, focusing on meaningful decisions and atmospheric worldbuilding.
With a story full of secrets, Citadel offers a unique art style that uses stylised greenscale pixel art graphics to create the mood. The heavy atmospheric environments are supported by evocative prose and an original soundtrack.
Will you try the demo?
The Steam demo is about 20-30 mins long and represents roughly one-fifth of the full game’s length. You can try it out if you like visual novels. The full release will have multiple endings with totally different outcomes.
If you’re not into sci-fi or visual novels, then read our other scoop on Exploration-Based Survival Horror Game Tache Noire.
