It’s the end of the year as we track it, and we feel fine. Fine enough that we reckon we’re in the perfect mood to write up a list of the very best games that came out for iPhone and iPad over the past 12 months.
There have been some impressive games for iOS this year, and we’ve narrowed it down to the top 10 very best. The cream of the crop. The best of the best. The goodest of the goodest. And so on. We’ve decided to focus on games you can get from the App Store for this list. If you’re interested in the best Apple Arcade games of 2020, you should click here to find out what they are.
If you’ve got your own suggestions you’d like to add, then make sure you stick them in the comments section at the bottom of the article. Before we get there, though, here are what we think are the top ten best games for iPhone and iPad that came out in 2020.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
Everone knows that cards are the coolest way to play games. Buttons are for losers. Death to buttons. Thronebreaker is a brilliant, single player narrative card game that uses the mechanics of Gwent and makes something pretty darn special. There’s hours of game here and you’re going to love every second of it.

Retro Bowl
I can honestly say that I’ve played Retro Bowl more than almost any other game this year. Mobile or otherwise. It is the perfect mix of strategy, management, and throwing balls a really long way. I’m still playing it right now. I imagine I’m going to be playing it into 2021 and beyond. Because it’s absolutely flipping brilliant.

Sky: Children of the Light
Some games trade in excitement and adventure and all of that stuff that makes your heart beat faster and your palms sweat sweatier. Sky: Children of the Light trades in joy. Bright, wonderful, hope-filled joy. For a few moments it makes you believe the world isn’t a glob of bird excrement sliding down a car windshield.

Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale
The original Meteorfall was really good. This sequel adds a whole bunch more stuff. And as well all know, more stuff makes things better. Okay, that isn’t the case most of the time, but it’s definitely the case here. Bigger, brighter and packed full of wonderful ideas. Even if you’ve not played the original, there’s so much to enjoy here.

League of Legends: Wild Rift
Everyone loves MOBAs nowadays. You literally, LITERALLY, can’t go outside nowadays without someone throwing a MOBA directly into your face. That might be a slight exaggeration, but hey, it’s the holidays. League of Legends: Wild Rift is a really good MOBA and you’re going to have fun playing it. If someone throws it in your face, then you should thank them.

KartRider Rush+
Neeeoooowwwww. Vrrrroooooomm. Those are some of the sounds that you’re going to be making while you’re playing KartRider Rush+. This is arcade racing done just right, fast and frantic and packed to the car-gills with exciting modes. It’s pretty much everything you want from a kart racer. It’s better than Mario Kart Tour. There. I said it.

Xcom 2: Collection
Oh would you look at that. A massive, in-depth tactical classic that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand. It’s stuffed to bursting with levels and challenges and aliens and lasers and all the cool things that you need to fight back against an alien invasion. How powerful are iPhones and iPads nowadays? Xcom 2 powerful mother flippers.

Slay the Spire
Actually, this might be the game that I’ve played the most this year. It’s an unbelievably brilliant mixture of a roguelike and a deck-builder. You’ll die, a lot, and then you’ll jump back i because you’ve learned something. Learning AND cards? Holy moly Slay the Spire really does have everything. It’s also got magical orbs. Sick.

Genshin Impact
Oooooh, that’s a pretty game. You’re right. It is pretty, but it’s a lot more than that too. It’s a massive and entertaining ARPG with deep gacha mechanics and a massive cast of characters. It’s also free. There’s raids and loot and oh so much more waiting for you. If you haven’t played it yet, maybe you should play it now. You’re probably going to love it. Probably.

Holovista
A beguiling narrative hidden object adventure that weaves together social media and photography and architecture and mental health and past traumas and all sorts of other things into a marvellous and memorable experience. You’ll finish it in one sitting. And then you’ll go “wow” and have to stay sat down for a long time.
