High Road Stories is bringing its magic-realist exploration game The Memphis Chronicles to PC in January 2027. The German indie studio has spent nearly a decade making immersive experiences across XR, interactive installations, and domes, and The Memphis Chronicles is its first PC game.
But right now, the studio is gearing up for a Steam demo for The Memphis Chronicles, which kicks off on October 5th, 2026. It’s timed around the 2026 edition of the Haunted House FearFest’s Looks Creepy Cool Showcase and the upcoming Steam Next Fest.
An extremely weird version of Memphis
So, you go on a canoe trip. After swimming back to the surface of a lake, you end up in a city full of questions. The city is filled with objects carrying memories connected to your own past and the lives of other people. So, you’re left wandering through streets and buildings that feel familiar yet strange.
Then the people and creatures you run into get increasingly weird. There’s an elephant, well-dressed demons, an elusive arsonist, and a homeless prophet, among other things. You’ve also got the Beatles, Stravinsky, and the subterranean ruins of a long-lost civilization.
The city is built from layers of history, culture, art, and imagination. The game uses environmental design, mini-games, Easter eggs, and musical influences to throw ideas from wildly different places and time periods together.
There are references to Western ritual traditions and Eastern philosophies through the work of Carl Jung and puppeteer Richard Teschner. You’ll also find surreal collages of Joseph Cornell, the classic children’s book Peter Pan, and the bittersweet traditions of New Orleans jazz funerals.
The Memphis Chronicles demo is heading to Steam on October 5th, 2026. It’s also planned to come to Meta Quest with a VR version later in 2027.
