Veteran roguelike developer Tommy McKay has announced a new title called Allfather. It’s a roguelike with Norse mythology, first-person combat, permadeath, and PSX-era horror-game visuals. Yes, that’s quite a combo for a game!

McKay previously made the self-published hit Gnomes, but Allfather is the first game he’s releasing as a solo developer. The game is also taking things in a much more brutal direction unlike his previous title.

You play as a fallen shieldmaiden who was rejected by the Valkyries after dying. She gets sent to Hel anyway and decides that this judgement is not going to stand. So, you fight your way from the depths of Helheim all the way up toward Valhalla, using blessings from the gods along the way.

Allfather is a first-person roguelike where awareness and patience are what keep you alive

Every run takes you through a fresh climb across the nine realms of Norse myth, with each realm acting as its own biome. They have different environmental challenges, different enemies, and their own boss.

The actual journey through Helheim is a one-way road. Doors lock behind you, bosses seal off each region, and portal choices determine which rewards you’re going to fight for. Meanwhile, the enemy list includes masterful duelists, creeping undead, frenzied beasts and colossal bosses.

You fight enemies to earn experience and level up inside procedurally generated dungeons. Pick your rewards, build around different divine blessings, and find relics that can completely change how a run works.

Death is permanent for the run in Allfather. But runes and iron earned during your attempts carry over into Hel’s Hall, where you can work on persistent progression between runs. You can unlock weapons, improve your stats through a rune tree, and spend your resources with merchants.

Take a look at the game below and wishlist it on Steam.
