This 1998 classic was (still is) a superhit because of its blend of deep psychological horror with a surreal, narrative-driven exploration of human trauma and madness. And now it’s coming in a revamped avatar soon. I’m talking about Sanitarium Enhanced.
The enhanced version will finally bring Sanitarium to consoles!
The psychological horror point-and-click adventure will reinvent itself with a bunch of modern improvements. It will release on PC through Steam and GOG, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch.
Sanitarium originally was developed by DreamForge Intertainment and published by ASC Games. Released for Microsoft Windows, it was ported to iOS and Android in 2015. The Enhanced version comes from QUByte Interactive and DreamForge Intertainment, with Ziggurat Interactive handling publishing.
The story begins after a car accident, when you wake up in a gloomy, decaying asylum completely amnesiac and disfigured. The first thing you have to do is escape your cell. Next, you’re dragged through a series of nightmare worlds while trying to figure out the truth about your identity.
The game uses an isometric perspective and a non-tiled 2D navigation system. One chapter takes you into a village filled with deformed children. Another involves a town full of insectoid mutations. Then there’s a circus of the grotesque.
Keeping all that original psychological horror adventure intact, Sanitarium Enhanced is adding a bunch of new features. The first one is full controller support, including on consoles and Steam Deck. Widescreen resolution is also available during gameplay.
There’s an optional hint mode that helps you find interactable objects. The Enhanced version also gets Steam Deck optimisations, an extras gallery containing bonus content, and never-before-seen material from the original development team. Take a look at the trailer for Sanitarium Enhanced below.
