With the second part of Anomaly Cafe’s Afterlife content we got a new playable character. This one is a little odd though, in a number of ways. They require a little bit more effort to get than handing over Bells, a small matter of venturing beyond death and pulling a soul back from the world of spirits… you know, the average Tuesday at Emma’s Cafe. So, if you’ve been wondering how to get The Watcher in Anomaly Cafe, then look no further.

How To Get The Watcher In Anomaly Cafe

First section is talking about the character, the second is a step by step on how to unlock it. Finally we’ll give our thoughts on if the secret quest is worth the effort.

Who Is The Watcher?

The Watcher is a new playable character, introduced with Part 2 of the Afterlife Update. (You can read more about the content of that in our update log.)

This character has what can only be described as a really interesting character setup, which is going to guarantee a pretty unique playstyle. At a glance, The Watcher…

• Cooks 15% slower than the base speed.
• Cleans 5% slower than the base speed.
• Earns 15% less money than the base.
• Cannot use weapon items.
• Cannot use sanity restoring items like coffee.

A pretty devastating set of debuffs. So what does the character have to make up for it?

Double Bells

Earns twice the amount of Bells during gameplay.

Devour

The Watcher’s active skill lets them regain Sanity by consuming an Anomaly. Yup, they just eat them. Guess not being able to use weapons isn’t a huge deal.

How To Get The Watcher

Unlike most of the other classes so far, The Watcher requires completing a hidden questline. Well, it was hidden until players found it. Still, now we can relay it to you.

• Play a run of Anomaly Cafe, and die as soon as possible. It needs to be before Day 10.
  • This means letting your Sanity drop to 0. The easiest way it to let an Anomaly in and let it chew on you.
  • You should do this in a single player run for a number of reasons.
• Once you die, you should pass to the Afterlife. Once you get there, speak to the grey cat NPC.
  • They’re sat behind the shrine where you talk to Bingo. Got through their dialogue. You’ll offer to help them return to the living world.
• Speak to Bingo and leave the Afterlife. 
  • A portal should open up next to the cat.
• Play normally up to Day 11. 
  • Fill out orders, filter out anomalies, stay alive.
• After Day 11, die again.
  • Once again, letting an Anomaly bite you repeatedly is the easiest way.
• Once you’re in the Afterlife Cafe, talk to the grey cat again to get Watcher’s Soul. 
  • The cat NPC should be milling around near where you spawn in.
  • The soul is an item that should take up an inventory slot. You need to keep hold of it.
• Complete the Afterlife Cafe segment.
  • It’s pretty much like a regular Anomaly Cafe shift, but a bit weirder and with more parkour.
• Speak to Bingo and return to the living world.
  • Come back with a second chance from Bingo. You should respawn in the cafe, nearly exactly where you left.
• Head out of the back to find Watcher. 
  • The now slightly undead cat is sitting against the wall around the back of the cafe, near the fuse box.
• Speak to Watcher to recruit them. 
  • Finish the dialogue to give the revenant cat a job in food service. Welcome to the team, Watcher.

After you’ve done all this, Watcher should become available in the class select screen.

Is The Watcher Worth It?

As you might have noticed, The Watcher comes with a LOT of downsides for its upsides. The result is something that’s not exactly there for optimizers. You’d be better off thinking of it as more of a challenge run type of character for more experienced players looking to mix things up. The Devour skill means there is a reason to keep anomalies around, at least long enough for The Watcher to chow down. Unlocking the character isn’t actually all that hard once you know how to do it, so we’d suggest going for it, if just to try the character out.
