Are you into old-school shoot ’em ups? Then I have the scoop on a new one that’s coming to consoles. Birdcage is already available on PC via Steam (it dropped in November 2025). And now, it’s coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC.
Birdcage lands on consoles on September 23rd, 2026
In fact, there’s a physical PS5 version coming too, although that one is taking its sweet time. The physical editions will start shipping in March 2027 through the eastasiasoft store and affiliated distribution partners, and pre-orders are already open.
Birdcage was shown at Tokyo Game Show in 2025, and is influenced by ’90s arcade shoot ’em up. It’s a vertical scrolling shooter, and mixes the explosive action of ’90s shooters with modern mechanics and a serious sci-fi story.
You’re constantly dealing with enemy swarms, switching between spread shots and focused attacks, and charging special weapons. You can also slash things with a melee sword. The story is inspired by Metal Gear Solid.
Birdcage digs into futuristic science and technology, political and military power struggles, and the nature of the human unconscious mind. There are dialogue scenes and event cutscenes pushing the narrative along, with memories to review as you progress and unlockable lore database entries.
Story Mode is the main mode and takes you through six stages, with mid-bosses, stage bosses and narrative interludes. Arcade Mode strips away the narrative and gives you a quicker way to concentrate on getting a good score. Then there’s Score Attack, which turns things into a race against the clock. Enemies keep spawning endlessly during a set time limit.
