Harmonie is an upcoming action-adventure that’s giving you a different kind of weapon to fight. The game is developed and published by L’Atelier, a French independent studio founded in 2024 by three developers.
Harmonie is L’Atelier’s boss rush with watercolour and Chinese ink-inspired visuals. It’s about Xio and his bizarrely useful living brush Astra. Although it’s an action game, the art is a huge part of it. Kind of like Okami.
You play as Xio, a warrior who has lost almost all of his senses. He can’t experience the world normally anymore, so he depends on Astra. It’s a mysterious living brush that helps him understand what’s going on around him. So, Astra is Xio’s entire way of seeing reality. The visual style shows you the world the way Xio is capable of understanding it.
When somebody talks, Astra writes the important words directly into Xio’s perception. If there’s something he needs to understand visually, she can draw it for him. Astra only paints whatever she thinks matters, so Xio experiences the world through a strange mix of watercolour, ink and empty space, which makes up words and drawings.
Harmonie is a boss rush first and foremost
It takes place after a devastating war between Light and Shadow. There are seven Guardians to deal with. Each one has their own attacks, mechanics and story, and they’re protected by Light, which makes them immortal.
Astra can cover the Guardians in ink, which reduces their Light protection. Once the boss has ink on them, Xio can hit them with his sword. That attack converts all the ink currently covering the boss into damage in one single hit.
But then, there’s a catch. When Xio uses Astra, his hearts gradually fill with ink and transform into brushes. Those ink-filled hearts increase his damage, so turning more of your health into ink makes Xio more powerful.
