Have you ever heard of MerMay? It’s a month-long art challenge held every May, about which we’ll get into later. The reason I’m bringing it up is a new title on itch.io called Tideheart. The developer, indie studio Broken Tail Interactive, just dropped a free playable demo for the game.
The game was actually called The Azure Project before this. They changed the name to Tideheart because it better suits the game’s underwater mythology, mystery, and the emotional side of the story. The main theme is the bond between the characters and the world around them.
Coming back to MerMay, it’s an annual event founded in 2016 by Tom Bancroft, a former Disney animator. Artists worldwide create and post mermaid-themed artwork daily during the entire month of May. The Tideheart demo launch date perfectly fits since it’s about a sibling merfolk duo exploring a flooded world looking for a powerful artefact for their village.

The demo is around 20 to 30 minutes long, giving the first look at the main characters, the underwater movement system, and a bunch of puzzles. Swimming being the main activity, the devs focused on momentum, verticality, freedom of movement, and jumps.
Tideheart is a narrative-focused 3D underwater fantasy adventure. So, everything revolves around exploration, environmental storytelling, and fluid underwater traversal. Every area is built vertically, so you’re constantly exploring spaces from top to bottom.
The environments range from bright sunlit reefs all the way down to deep ocean trenches swallowed by darkness. There are many hidden pathways, optional discoveries, and environmental details that reward you as well.
