This title has a lot of horses, but with human faces! Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts lets you run your own medieval art workshop. Developed by Yaza Games and published by Mythwright, it’s out now for PC.
Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts drops you in a cosy, pressure-free creative space
In that space, you can mess around with illuminated manuscript-style art. So, there’s gilded lettering, angels, lilies, and all the strange little details you’d expect from actual medieval illustrations. It also includes things like trumpets in bottoms and all sorts of odd marginalia.
You get two modes. Story Mode lets you create your own character and take commissions from clients across a kingdom that thrives on gossip and drama. You illustrate battles or romances, decorate love letters or even blackmail notes.
You also work on masquerade balls or something completely off-the-wall. The requests can get pretty strange, like grand clashes between snails and knights. As you complete these jobs, you earn coins and also nudge along a larger royal storyline in the background.
Meanwhile, you can pour the earnings back into your workshop. Tweak it with furniture, lighting, tapestries, flowers, windows, columns, and carpets. There’s even room for a pet companion, including a cat, a dog, and a tiny dragon!
Yes, there’s a Sandbox Mode, too.
This second mode turns Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts into a medieval Canva or Photoshop. You get a blank parchment, full access to the entire asset library, and no restrictions. You can pick from different parchment styles, switch between light and dark backgrounds, and start layering elements.
There are over 1000 pictures from real medieval art references. They cover everything from beasts and bugs to princes, paupers, clothing, expressions, vegetation, and other odd decorative bits. You can also add text using medieval fonts with those big, ornate, uppercase letters.
Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts is priced at $14.99 on Steam, but there’s a 20% discount at launch.
