I’ll admit it, I’m a new Resident Evil fan. I’ve always wanted to get into the franchise, but for many years, I couldn’t get past the horror. This is ironic, because my favourite movie genre is horror. There’s just something about being at the helm that makes it all the more stressful.

That all changed when I delved into the Silent Hill franchise. It helped me to get over that fear, but don’t get me wrong, there are some horror games that I absolutely will not touch, Outlast being one of them.

I dusted off my physical copy of the Resident Evil 2 Remake and booted it up. Instantly, I felt the familiarity of survival horror, and all of a sudden, it didn’t scare me as much as it used to. Bingo, I’d done it. I’d cracked the code; I can finally handle horror games, just about.

Short But Sweet

Fast forward, and I’ve now finished Resident Evil 4, and am partway through the Separate Ways DLC. But after pouring quite a few hours into RE2 and RE4, I’ve been thinking back to the Resident Evil 3 Remake. As soon as the credits rolled, I was surprised. I wanted more.

I immediately searched up what other people thought about the game’s duration, and I was met with similar opinions. Universally, the RE3 Remake is known to be a short title and much more stripped back than the original. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed RE3, but with how action-packed it is, it felt like it was over in a flash.

Despite the length of the game, Jill Valentine proves how strong a protagonist she is, so you can imagine my disappointment when I found out that the original included more content. The remake would have been the perfect opportunity to build on this, especially with the RE2 Remake featuring two almost identical playthroughs, which didn’t feel repetitive in the slightest.

With fewer puzzles and a focus on combat, I didn’t initially think this was a problem. It was something fresh compared to RE2, though I do love the puzzles in that game. But to remove all additional endings from the original RE3 to keep the game as linear as possible felt like a bit of a letdown.

Jill, You Deserved Better

Again, I enjoyed the remake, and I think it’s a fantastic game. I think it’s lacklustre compared to the RE2 and RE4 Remakes. I wanted more Carlos and Jill. Their chemistry was fun to watch, and despite their initial differences, they had each other’s backs no matter what. Jill is a strong protagonist, willing to put herself in danger for the greater good. Carlos is the same, but his quick wit and humour make him extremely likeable.

Overall, the remakes for RE2 and RE4 are just straight-up better. That isn’t to say you should skip the RE3 Remake, though. While I’m a Leon Kennedy fan, and you may think this sways my judgment, there are many other reasons RE3 ranks lower on my list. I prefer longer games that let me sink my teeth into them, and I got exactly that from RE2 and RE4.

Character Development

Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy from the Resident Evil Remakes. The image of Claire is from the Resident Evil 2 Remake and the image of Leon is from the Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Seeing Leon change from a confident recruit to a jaded hero because of the horrors is really interesting to me. It’s why I’m looking forward to playing Resident Evil 9, to see how his character has developed over many more years. And, well, getting to play as silver fox Leon Kennedy.

Even in the RE2 Remake, we see Claire go through hell to save Sherry. But in the RE3 Remake, Jill is already strong, and while she gets infected, she gets right back into it once Carlos saves her. I don’t see as much character development from Jill and Carlos as I do with the other characters, which is a shame, because I like both of them a lot. Maybe my opinion will change once I play the original.

I still can’t decide which is my favourite between RE2 and RE4 just yet. They’re both incredibly strong entries and are great for similar and also entirely different reasons. But I can safely say that I hold both titles to a super high standard. Due to how much I love these games, it has simply emphasised my overall disappointment with the RE3 Remake.

The Journey Continues

As a new fan who’s only played the remakes, I do intend to play the originals. Thanks to a recent sale on the PlayStation Store, I managed to bag the original RE4, RE0, RE5, RE6, and the RE1 Remaster.

Yes, I know the reputation of RE6, but here’s a fun fact: it was the first Resident Evil game I ever played back in the day. Maybe one day I’ll play the original versions of RE2 and RE3, but for now, all I have to go off of are the remakes. And in my honest opinion, the RE3 Remake could have been so much better.

I wrote a recent piece after finishing the RE2 Remake, focusing on my initial thoughts of the franchise as a new player.
