I cannot stop playing Heartopia right now. I look forward to logging in every day to see the new items that I can get my grubby little hands on so I can dress my silly little avatar. The ‘gacha game’ connotation may be putting people off, but I’m here to say it doesn’t make a difference in the slightest.
Why Heartopia is My Go-to Cosy Game Right Now
It’s been out for a little while now, well, at least for global players. I’m somewhat of a cosy game connoisseur, if I do say so myself, so it’s no surprise that I was immediately interested in Heartopia. From seeing advertisements for it on Instagram and YouTube, I was patiently waiting for its release. And then the day arrived! I made my character and entered the world of Heartopia full of hope.
Luckily, that hope wasn’t misplaced, and though I do have some qualms with the game, it’s definitely my go-to cosy game at the moment. I’m one of those people who can spend hours upon hours pouring over Animal Crossing, whether it’s New Horizons, New Leaf, or Pocket Camp – the Complete version, seeing as how the servers got shut down… that still sucks.
How Similar is it to Animal Crossing?
Anyway, I’m not here to talk about Animal Crossing, but I can’t help but compare the two, especially with there being quite a few overlaps. This probably explains why I enjoy Heartopia so much. It’s clearly its own game, but it takes pages… no, entire chapters out of Animal Crossing’s book.
The one thing that makes it so vastly different is the home-building aspect. Yes, I can decorate my house in Animal Crossing, but Heartopia features a building feature reminiscent of the Sims – another cosy franchise that I love dearly. Heartopia has so much to offer in terms of gameplay, with various tasks to complete depending on your mood.
Things to Do
Feel like building and decorating your home with pretty much complete freedom? Or maybe you want to upgrade your Hobbies? The Hobbies, clearly inspired by Animal Crossing, include bug catching, fishing, gardening and cooking. However, in Heartopia, there’s also birdwatching, animal care (including the cat and dog care Hobbies). Are they all fun? I’d be lying if I said yes.
Some of the Hobbies are quite grindy, if not a little dull at times. They’re fun at first, but once you see how much Proficiency you need for each level, it can seem like a bit of an arduous task at times. But, having grindy mechanics is a key part of cosy games – there is a perfect balance, though. I recommend passively working on each Hobby, rather than dedicating hours upon hours straight.
Character Customisation, Yay or Nay?
Okay, I’ve put off talking about customisation, because we all know how much I’ll waffle about it. But there’s a time and place to discuss it, and that time is now. Does Heartopia have good character customisation? I’d say so, but then again, any form of customisation drags me in.
With facial features, hairstyles (and colours), as well as a ton of clothing to unlock, you can make your character look however you want. It ticks all the boxes for me. I look forward to logging in every day to see what the Clothing Store is stocking, as well as the Furniture Store, of course. I’ve been able to unlock a bunch of new clothing with Gold and Wishing Stars.
To Gacha Or Not to Gacha
So, let’s address the elephant in the room. Heartopia is a gacha game. Yes, yes, I know what you’re probably thinking. I believe that gacha games can be cosy, but it depends on the gameplay and whether or not the gacha system is predatory or not.
As of right now, I don’t see Heartopia as a P2W predatory gacha game. The gacha banners solely feature clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and furniture. These items offer no benefits to your character, except for cosmetics. You can enjoy the entire game without spending your hard-earned money. Have I spent any money on the game yet? Nope, and I’ve got plenty of content to play through, and clothes to make new outfits with.
The game is new to global players, so we don’t have as much content as we will in the future. Maybe my opinion will change by then. But for now, I can positively say that Heartopia is perfect for the cosy gaming community. Plus, there’s nothing to lose, as it’s a free game. It’s up to you whether or not you want to spend your real-life money.
