Sleepy Squares (download from the App Store and Google Play Store) is a game about putting podgy-faced shapes to sleep. Unfortunately they only nap when they’ve got all of their eyes closed, and to do that you’re going to need to connect them in strings. Makes perfect sense.

You place the squares on a grid, and when every critter in a string has its eyes closed, it zaps off the board and you earn some points. There are shades of plenty of other puzzlers here, but there’s something pretty fresh about Sleepy Squares at the same time.

The squares you need to place drop down in a random order, but you can see what the next couple are going to be which lets you think a few moves ahead.

Interestingly, the board will collapse as you play, which narrows the scope of your positional choices. You can repair it with a hammer, but the tool needs matches to power-up.

You’ve also got a button that lets you swap out a square. That comes in super handy when you’ve got a three-eyed monster in a corner that’s blocking you from clearing your chain. Swap it out for a two and hey-presto, here’s some points.

Sleepy Squares isn’t quite as relaxing a puzzler as its name might suggest. It can get pretty frustrating, especially towards the end of a run when you’re getting more and more three-eyers and there’s no where useful to put them.

There’s a solid core idea here and it’s enough to keep you distracted for a while. But Sleepy Squares doesn’t have a sharp enough hook to really get under your skin.
