Zozo and the Lost Dreams is bringing back what made being a kid feel like the coolest thing ever in 2000s. A 2D Metroidvania platformer, it comes from developer Red Dunes Games and publisher Agate Studio. The game is inspired by classic Saturday morning cartoons from the late-90s and early-2000s, which were full of ridiculous jokes, bright worlds, and bizarre characters.

Zozo and the Lost Dreams is coming to PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox (including Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S). The full release is planned for 2027. And for now, the game is headed to The Tokyo Game Show, where players will get a closer look at the game.

You play as Zozo, a 13-year-old boy who really, really wants to become a superhero. With the help of his brilliant but eccentric neighbour, Professor Aisha, who is also a mad scientist, Zozo gets access to a pretty wild invention. It can transport him into his own dreams.

And then, a mysterious incident stops Zozo from waking up. He ends up trapped inside his own subconscious. Now he has to find his way home by travelling through a bunch of completely different dream worlds, dealing with strange enemies, bizarre challenges, and puzzles.

Zozo and the Lost Dreams mixes pixel-art sprites with rasterized environments, with the goal of bringing back that exaggerated cartoon look. It sure feels like one of those animated shows where literally anything can happen because apparently the laws of reality have taken the morning off.

Zozo and the Lost Dreams has a knockback mechanic

When Zozo attacks an enemy, they can get knocked into other enemies, causing chain reactions. It’s like the effect to pinball or bowling. You can turn one hit into a whole ridiculous sequence of enemies bouncing into each other.

And the dreams themselves are constantly changing. One moment you might be scaling mountainous cupcakes, and the next you’re dealing with predatory computer bugs. Every dream has its own theme, rules, characters, surprises, and general flavour.

Until the game arrives, check out our scoop on Narrative Point-and-Click Game Scholar Adventure’s Sequel Lost Night.
