Kill the Shadow is a suspense adventure RPG with a unique time-rewind investigation mechanic. In simple words, though, it’s a detective game with semi-open exploration and a supernatural twist built around reconstructing the past.
Shadowlight is handling development, while Phoenix Game is publishing it. The game has a 2.5D pixel art style and is a narrative-driven adventure with meaningful player choices and multiple endings. For its Chinese cyber-noir world, the devs have combined detailed 3D HD environments with 2D characters. Take a look at Kill the Shadow below!
What’s the story in Kill the Shadow?
It’s set in Dark Tide City, a divided city hiding a decade-old conspiracy beneath its broken history. The central mystery involves recovering the city’s lost memories while uncovering who manipulated Dark Tide City into becoming what it is today.
You play as Lucas, a former police officer and former detective. Attached to his back is a mysterious creature known simply as the Shadow. It’s a supernatural being that can read memories and reconstruct the final moments of people who’ve died.
The Shadow carries a little gremlin energy. Lucas uses it to replay crime scenes exactly as they happened. Watching the last moments of the dead unfold, he pieces together evidence, exposes lies, and uncovers the people pulling strings behind the scenes.
Outside the detective work, you’ll also build Lucas however you want. The RPG progression lets you improve abilities like Strength, Spirit, and Charm. Depending on how you’ve developed him, you can persuade people, rely on deduction and intelligence, and charm your way through conversations.
Alternatively, you can grease a few palms, play psychological mind games, or simply beat a confession out of a suspect if diplomacy completely falls apart. Every conversation, investigation, and decision affects how the story plays out.
Kill the Shadow launches for PC through Steam on August 5th, 2026. Until then, you can wishlist it and try the free playable demo if you’re curious.
