Remember Darkstone? It was one of the popular late 90s action RPGs that left quite a mark on gamers. If you’re a 90s kid, you might even remember your DarkStone sessions on the GameSpy Arcade. Well, the title is relaunching on Steam as DarkStone Restoration!
A modern rework of the 1999 original
Paul Cuisset, the original creator of the series, is handling Darkstone Restoration. The new version will bring improvements to stability, compatibility, controls, readability, and a bunch of general quality-of-life tweaks.
DarkStone Restoration will include a new Quest Editor. The original feature let players create custom quests, maps, and adventures. The new version will further enhance things, both visually and technically.
The original Darkstone was released in July 1999. It came from French developer Delphine Software and was published by Microids. It was released on PlayStation in 2001. Later, in 2014, a port of the game was dropped for iOS and Android by Paul Cuisset.
It brought the common loop of dungeon crawling, loot hunting, and stat building. You work through four lands of Uma, while improving strength, magic, dexterity, vitality, and gear along the way.
But then, the Evil Draak teams up with Death and starts tearing through the world. It leaves you to hunt down 7 Legendary Crystals across dangerous regions filled with enemies and massive keeps.
The game comes with 4 difficulty levels, along with randomly generated dungeons, quests, and items. Cooperative play supported up to three friends, and you could pick from 8 characters across 4 classes, including warrior, wizard, thief, and monk. There are also more than 30 weapon types, 32 magic spells, and 32 different environments.
DarkStone Restoration will be out in early access on Steam soon. Until then, you can grab the original from Steam if you want to.
