Super Fowlst 2 is not a complicated game, but it embraces its lack of frills and offers up something quite irresistible.
A continuation of the Fowlst series from developer Thomas Young, it sees you play as a chicken – who can only be controlled by the two shoulder buttons.
The left trigger flings you left, the right – well, you can guess. You have to avoid obstacles as well as attacks by enemies – who you can destroy by barging into them.
Pressing X allows you to use power ups you occasionally pick up, such as health and unique attacks.
Once you’ve got rid of all the enemies in each short stage you move onto the next. The catch is that each level is randomly generated, so you’ll never know what you’re about to come up against next.
After you’ve been hit three times you have to start again from the first stage, or can start from a few levels in. There’s the occasional boss fight to mix things up, and enough new sights gets introduced as you progress to make sure things don’t get dull.
Super Fowlst 2 is a high-score chaser experience then, and was a great fit for mobile when it arrived on smartphones last year – but it works pretty damn well on Switch too.
There’s even a case to be made that the shoulder button focused control scheme for Switch is a bit more satisfying than the mobile’s touchscreen set up.
The unusual control scheme is really what makes the game worth playing. It’s not simple to get to grips with, but once mastered (to some extent at least) it’s highly rewarding.
There’s a range of characters to unlock too, but they’re all cosmetic sadly and don’t change how you play the game.
Our only real criticism is that this could have positioned itself as the complete Fowlst package for console, offering the original Fowlst and Super Fowlst as unlockables.
For the low price-tag Super Fowlst 2 is hard to resist though, and anyone after a well presented and charming high-score focused experience should look no further.
