Slayaway Camp was a brilliant and hilarious puzzler that took its cues from the slasher movies of the 80’s. Slashy Camp (download from the App Store and Play Store) is a squished down, endless, casual spin on the same idea, and it works pretty darn well.

You’re playing as a murderous monster, aping the likes of Jason from Friday the 13th, Freddy Krueger and many more. You swipe to move around the screen and to hack up your victims, of which there are many.

Swipe when you’re next to a cowering teen and you’ll kill them, but there are other ways to dispatch them too. You can spook campers into running into traps, from fires to holes to lakes. These obstacles can kill you too.

You’ll pick up weapons as you play, and when you use these you’ll play a quick mini-game that involves stopping a bar at the right place. Weapon kills get you loads more points, as do spook kills and multiple murders with one move.

The more points you get, the more XP you’re awarded when you die. This XP unlocks new weapons that pop up in the game, as well as new characters. It’s a neat system and means you’re always progressing when you play.

The different methods of murder mean no two runs are ever the same. And in a nice twist, hurting animals ends your run. You need to carefully navigate any critters on the map or it’s back to the start.

There are cops with guns, grizzled mountain-men with shotguns and you need to figure out strategies to take them down without getting busted or blasted too. Kill enough and you’ll enter Beast Mode, becoming an invulnerable murder machine for a while.

When Slashy Camp clicks, it’s a brilliant, quick-fire burst of arcade murder that you’re going to play with a grin on your face. It might not have the depth of the other games in the series, but you’re going to dip into it time and time again.
