Creativity is an important part of life, it’s a call back to childhood, where anything could be anything else and boundless adventures awaited just on the edge of our imagination. Which is why games that let you create are so popular.
Astracraft (download from the App Store and Play Store) is one of those. It’s a massive mechanical building block toy room of possibilities that gives you everything you need to create towering battlebots. And it’s an awful lot of fun.
Right from the get go you’ve got all the bits and pieces you need to make some impressive creations. And the more you play, the more extra pieces you’re going to unlock. The play mainly involves blasting other player’s robots in arena-battles to the the explosion.
There’s always some tinkering to be done as well. If your bot isn’t performing right, head back to the cyber garage and whack some new shields, weapons, legs or armor onto it. Don’t like that gun? Stick another one on. Heck, stick another three one.
There’s a palpable joy to Astracraft. It looks sincere and poe-faced, until you watch the intro video that features a T-rex robot with tiny, boxing-glove clad arms. It’s angry. It breathes fire.
The interface for creating your robots is spot on, simple to use and allows you the space to explore almost endless possibilities. The shooting is solid enough that it doesn’t detract from the mechanical aspects.
Astracraft is the sort of game that needs a big community to really succeed. You want to show off what you’ve made – by which we mean use it to rain hell-fire down on your enemies – and the more players there are, the more people you can show off to.
If it can build up a big enough audience, then this is a game that’s likely to stick around on your phone or tablet for an awfully long time. Maybe download it and start moving it in the right direction, eh?
