Turn-based, grid-based Soulslike deck-builder game Death Howl has dropped its first major update, The Rebirth Update. The open-world title was released in late 2025 by developer The Outer Zone and publisher 11 Bit Studios.
The Rebirth Update brings the Rebirth Mode to Death Howl
But you don’t get access to the new mode right away, though. You have to actually finish the game first, normally on Normal difficulty, and then it unlocks. The mode is all about survival of the fittest.
Enemies are not just stronger, they’re meaner. They have new or enhanced abilities, like multiplying themselves if you don’t deal with them fast enough. Or absorbing weaker enemies to steal their stats.
The Realmless cards got a full makeover. New names, new effects, and new visuals. Also, Ro herself changes a bit in this mode. She now shows up wearing a blue robe, which marks the tougher phase of her journey. Take a look at her below.
And there’s more than the Rebirth mode in this Death Howl update. It’s Custom Mode. It unlocks after you complete Rebirth Mode and lets you mess with everything. You can tweak enemy health, Ro’s health, pick which cards are available, add restrictions, change penalties, and just shape the run however you want.
The devs also made it clear that this update came from player feedback. People wanted more challenge, so there you have it now. Meanwhile, the normal mode still has new stuff for players. There are 7 new totems that drop from all mini bosses. The devs buffed some cards and totems, and also nerfed a few outlier enemies.
Grab the game now!
Death Howl is available on Steam, GOG, PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. In the game, you guide a mother named Ro through a dark, Nordic-inspired spirit realm to bring back her son. It deals with themes of grief and loss, while using a deck of cards and strategic combat.
