The full game Shell of a King is finally out on Steam. Developed and published by Rosune, the game was launched in early access on Steam in May 2024. It’s a top-down action bullet hell RPG, revolving around dodging, boss fights, and exploration.
The world design is non-linear and interconnected, similar to a Metroidvania-style map. You can explore in different directions, find new areas, bosses, NPCs, items, and secrets. Shell of a King has multiple endings
It’s a ruined world that collapsed while waiting for the return of old gods, leaving only the strongest and most depraved beings alive. You are imprisoned beneath the royal capital of Agathara and have to fight your way up to the surface.
The game includes a lot of hidden content and secrets that reward exploration and puzzle-solving. There are three endings as well, which depend on your choices throughout the game.
There’s an NG+ mode, which lets you start a new game while keeping items and levels from the previous playthrough. Meanwhile, an Easy Mode lets you experience the game without the full difficulty and simply enjoy the 2D and 3D hand-drawn graphics.
The combat in Shell of a King has souls-like mechanics, especially in the dodge roll and difficulty style. The game features over 20 tough boss fights, including depraved monsters, giant sentient cubes, and wardens.
There are also many different enemies across different areas. And each area introduces new enemy types, so the gameplay keeps changing instead of repeating the same fights.
Shell of a King has over 100 items to discover. Every regular enemy has a unique item drop, and many of these items can change how your attacks work. The game also includes a level system and build customisation that let you level up stats and choose different play styles.
