As someone who is a huge fan of Hunter x Hunter, I couldn’t be more excited about playing the fighting game that takes inspiration from one of my all-time favourite shows.

In my HUNTER X HUNTER NEN X IMPACT Review, I’ll go through my thoughts on this game and all the things I loved, as well as the things that didn’t stick. But one thing does stick, and that is Hisoka’s Bungee Gum. You can find out more about the game and grab download links from the Official Website.

A Vast Roster of Characters

Image shows Kite from the game HUNTER X HUNTER NEN X IMPACT with the words "Come at me as soon as you're ready" on the screen.

My initial excitement for the game was caused by seeing the line-up for the playable characters you can fight as. I immediately knew I’d be going for Kite. Once you enter the tutorial, you can see the unique abilities each character has, which are inspired by their abilities in the show. So, Kite has his Crazy Slots, Hisoka has his Bungee Gum, and so on. I loved the level of detail everyone has, and the game pays tribute to the cast extremely well.

I then realised, where is Illumi? Okay, I wondered that about other characters missing, but there were a few odd characters in the mix. By no means a fault with the game, but I do wonder how Genthru made an appearance, but Illumi didn’t. His Nen Needles would have made a great weapon!

As this is my first fighting game I’ve ever played, I took my time in the tutorial. Luckily, it breaks everything down and is easy to follow. There are a lot of controls, so I can understand how someone can be confused. I had to replay it a few times to make sure I understood, but there were times when I was slightly overwhelmed with what was going on and what I needed to do.

In Story Mode, you will have training sessions every few chapters, which act as a tutorial. I found these helpful to remind myself how things work, and I got to learn new fighting techniques.

Story Mode and CPU Battles

Image shows Hisoka from HUNTER X HUNTER NEN X IMPACT holding a butterfly and smiling.

If you play in Story Mode, you’ll be fighting against a CPU. This is where my biggest issue is. By no means am I flexing my skills, but I found each battle very easy. Although fights did get harder as I worked my way through each chapter, it didn’t take much for me to defeat the opponent.

Before each fight, you get missions. For example, using a specific ability or completing a task within a certain time frame. This will determine the rank you get. If you like to become the best, I see the appeal of replaying until you get the highest rank. I did appreciate having fixed things to focus on, but aside from that, gameplay felt very simple.

This leads me to my next point. In Story Mode, most of it is the story. Each chapter feels like watching an episode of the anime (although it was pictures, not animation). And while it was nice to ‘re-watch’ my favourite scenes with partial voice acting, it felt like a lot of build-up to have one battle at the end that lasted 30 seconds. I know it is ‘Story Mode’, but it took a long time to get through, and multiple fights in one chapter would have seemed more fitting.

Battle Against Friends

It’s also worth mentioning that in Story Mode, you don’t get to choose your character. So, once I had had enough of all the reading and was itching for a worthy battle, I decided to try out co-op and made my mum play with me.

I had to most fun playing against another person, especially as it lasted for more than a minute. We each got to choose three characters for our teams and played different rounds. We also had the option to change backgrounds from the show to fight in. As each character is so different, we tried out different teams to create our favourite. To my disappointment, Kite wasn’t as strong as I would have hoped. If anyone is wondering, my team lineup ended up being Chrollo, Kurapika, and Feitan!

If you don’t have someone to play with near you, you can enter Online Mode, where you connect and find a lobby with other players. This took a while to set up, which already made me hesitant. By the time I got inside, it took a long time to search for another player, and it never found anyone. So, I can’t say for sure how Online battles are, but it was disappointing that I couldn’t even be matched with someone.

Experience the World of Hunter x Hunter

Image shows Gon and Killua running and smiling with a man standing between them.

If you’re someone who wants more of the fighting aspect of this game rather than focusing on the fact that it’s Hunter x Hunter, I can see why it’s not as enjoyable. Fights are simple at their core, despite there being different attacks you can do. Story Mode had a lot of story. And while it was skippable, I’d often skip it just for a quick fight, before entering another long story-filled chapter.

That being said, if you do love the Hunter x Hunter world, this game is a must-play for fans.

Hearing the iconic lines of your favourite characters (especially Hisoka constantly saying ‘Bungee Gum’ during fights) is enjoyable. Not to mention being able to re-create fights seen in the anime and manga. I finally got to see Hisoka vs Chrollo. But hey, I won’t say who won. You’ll have to find out for yourself.

Although you can’t date Hunter x Hunter characters, why not check out our Date Everything! Review?
