Steam has been at the top of the PC gaming food chain for years, setting the standard for digital game distribution and building a massive community to boot.

But now, Microsoft PC Game Pass is challenging the king, offering an enticing alternative with its subscription model and a big, ever-changing game library. We’ve teamed up with the people at Eneba to try and answer the question of whether Xbox Game Pass could actually replace Steam as the go-to gaming hub for PC players.

Pricing, Value, and Game Library

At its core, Microsoft PC Game Pass offers a whole new kind of value. For a monthly subscription fee you get access to a constantly updated library of games, from AAA titles to indie darlings. You pay once and can sample any game, whereas Steam sticks to the traditional model where you buy a license to play each game individually.

Game Pass also allows day-one access to new releases, thanks to Microsoft’s recent acquisitions of major studios like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Steam offers these games too, but you’ll be paying full price for them – meaning in terms of getting maximum variety at a lower price, Game Pass is a no-brainer.

Which Is More Indie Friendly?

Steam has built a reputation as an indie game paradise, with extensive community support, user reviews, and tools like the Steam Workshop for mods. It’s also a prime space for discovering up-and-coming games from smaller studios.

But the Xbox Game Pass PC isn’t too bad in the discovery department either. The Game Pass Core library includes a great mix of popular titles and hidden gems, and it’s arguably a lot easier to try new games when they’re essentially “free” with your subscription.

Value for Your Money

A lot of your decision between which is better, Xbox Game Pass PC and Steam, comes down to what you value most in a gaming platform. While Steam’s legacy is hard for any platform to top, there’s no arguing PC Game Pass offers superb value for money – even if you never actually ‘own’ any of the titles you play on it.

Xbox Game Pass PC is ultimately pushing boundaries with its low-cost, high-value model that makes it easier than ever to try and enjoy new games though, and thanks to marketplaces like Eneba it’s easy to get a cheap subscription (as well as low cost Steam cards too of course!).

So although Steam is still a platform no gamer can really ignore, services like Xbox Game Pass PC are definitely changing the way many consume and discover new titles. Which can only be a good thing.
