Rivengard (download from the App Store and Play Store) is trying to do for the turn based strategy genre what Clash Royale did for the MOBA. It distills the core of what makes those games so great into something you can pick up and play in mobile-sized gaming sessions.

And it works pretty darn well. There’s a depth here that you might not be expecting, and a simplicity that keeps things easy enough for anyone to give the game a go. It looks great, it plays great and there’s a lot of fun to be had in its tight, tactical skirmishes.

The game sees you building up a team of warriors to smash up bad guys. They all have different skills, strengths and weaknesses, so balancing out your stompy face-punches with nimble slashers and magic wielders is key.

Each level takes a handful of minutes to complete, but there’s everything you’d expect here. You need to make use of the terrain, take out powerful enemies quickly and think through your unit positioning if you want to win.

You equip new items to power up your characters, and can draw new ones, or shards to power up the ones you’ve already got, via a gacha mechanic. There’s a decent level of experimenting here, as you try and figure out the strongest team you’ve got at your disposal.

Units can move, attack and (some of them, anyway) heal. They’ve also got single-use special moves that can change the tide of battle. These might involve powerful hits, group heals, drawing aggro or unleashing AI units onto the battlefield.

There’s a decent rhythm to the action here, and plenty of different modes – including multiplayer – that are going to keep you on your toes. Rivengard is the sort of game it’s quite difficult to dislike, and we reckon you’re going to have a whale of a time playing it.
