There are a lot of golf games on the App Store. They range from deep simulations to wacky takes on sport. Golf Skies (download from the App Store and Google Play Store) definitely fits into the latter category, since it involves gravity, ball manipulation and annoying fish that can bat your shot into a water hazard.
Everything’s pretty simple here. You drag back to make your shot, moving your finger to change the direction your ball is going to fly off in. You’re smashing it into a sky filled with small planets. Things get a bit more interesting when your ball is airborne.
You can control the flight of your ball for a few seconds by tapping buttons on the left and right of the screen. This lets you weave through obstacles and collect coins and power-ups. Once you run out of energy though you’ll be sucked into the nearest planet.
There are different types of ground you can land on. Well mowed fairways, dark patches of rough, sand traps and water hazards. Hit a tree and you’ll take a penalty stroke, plop into the water and the same happens.
Each course has a par score, and hitting it, or below it, will bag you a higher star rating. With some of them it’s pretty easy, others require you to navigate some really tricky obstacles and figure out quicker ways to get to the hole.
The game never gets too complicated, though. It’s the sort of experience you can pick up and have a thwack at, then put down and go and do something else. It’s definitely not going to get stuck in your brain like some other games.
Golf Skies is an entertaining, short blast of golfing silliness. It’s tricky enough to keep you engaged, but doesn’t quite have the score-bettering compulsion of some of its contemporaries. Still, it’s a great way to fill a spare ten minutes.
