The best casual games are the ones that take a tiny gem of an idea and polish it to a blinding level of perfection.
That’s very much the approach taken by indie developer Ken Torii, whose new game Lemme HUP! takes a single minigame from Mario Party’s compendious collection and turns it into a fully fledged casual title in its own right.
The concept is simple. You play as an adorable, bulbous purple animal called Gyubo, who looks like a cross between a spaniel and a baby tyrannosaurus, and your aim is simply to jump.
Various obstacles are flying across your path, and you need to vault over them to stay in the game. A single moment’s contact with an errant piece of debris will send you tumbling right back to the beginning of the stage.
To make matters worse, the movement patterns of the objects are constantly changing, so you can’t rely on simple rhythm to get you through. The game frequently tries to trip you up, by adjusting its pace or throwing in little visual distractions. You need to concentrate the whole time.
That might make Lemme HUP! sound like a stressful experience – and it is, but in a good way. Despite its adorable, pastel-hued presentation, Lemme HUP! is challenging enough to keep you engaged and gunning to reach the next level.
As you make your way through the campaign you’ll acquire new skills and abilities to combat the new mechanics the game throws at you.
Lemme HUP! combines a cosy, cuddly look with an iron core of satisfying and challenging gameplay, just like the classic party game collection that inspired it.
To check out Lemme HUP! for yourself, download it for free right now on Google Play and the App Store. The game will get future updates adding unlockable costumes, skins and level ups too, so what are you waiting for.
