Every so often, a totally original game comes along. Timeline Traveller is one of those games.
Developed by Mifux Studio, Timeline Traveller is part puzzler, part platformer. It sees you guiding a dude to a flag in a series of levels by tweaking his timeline so that events happen in exactly the right order at exactly the right times.
The screen is split into two parts: the top, where the action plays out, and the bottom, where you’ll find a series of sliders with different commands on them. An arrow pointing to the right means “run right”, an arrow pointing up means, “jump”, and so on.
Once you’ve got your commands into the right sequence, you tap “play” to execute your plan. It’s a bit like executing a sequence in the excellent Human Resource Machine.
Some of the commands apply to your little grey man, and some apply to other objects on the screen. For example, an up arrow might make you jump, but it could also make an elevator ascend.
Some commands are greyed out, too, which means they’re fixed to the spot and you have to find a way to work around them.
At first Timeline Traveller gives you a fairly simple set of commands to manage, but over time it adds more and more. You’ll step into teleporting portals, shift blobby monsters out of the way, blow things up, and so on – all by setting sliders and pressing “play”.
Timeline Traveller is an ingenious concept, encouraging you to think methodically as you plot your little guy’s progress through a series of fiendishly designed stages across four season-themed worlds.
And while it’s seriously challenging, the game gives you infinite scope for experimentation, and doesn’t punish you for getting it wrong as you find your feet. Eventually you’ll be able to take one look at a stage and immediately know where to place the sliders, which is immensely satisfying.
You can pick up Timeline Traveller for free right now on Google Play and the App Store.
