Controls can make or break an action game. It doesn’t matter how pretty or clever it is, if when you tap the screen your character doesn’t do what you told it to. That’s not a problem with Otherworld Legends (download from the App Store and Google Play Store) though. The game is slick in all of the right ways, violent and engaging, and will leave you wanting more.
There are ideas from a bunch of different genres here, with shades of classic beat-’em-ups, old-school ARPGs and a decent chunk of modern-retro-roguelike twists too. And it all fits together pretty damn well.
You lead a character through a randomly generated dungeon, smashing everything that moves and collecting piles of loot. You’ll level up as you fight, and those levels carry over. But the gear you equip is lost every time you die.
Otherworldly Behaviour
There are boss fights, secret rooms and everything else you’d expect from a smash-and-grab dungeon crawler. It might not have the same depth as some other games in the genre, and it’s not the most original experience, but it’s surprisingly compulsive all the same.
A run through the game never lasts too long, and the frantic nature of the enemies you’re fighting means there’s not that much to figure out for your next try. Button bashing won’t help, but in terms of combos things are pretty simple.
Otherworld Legends won’t change the way you look at ARPGs, but it’ll entertain you for long enough that you won’t begrudge it its foibles too much. There are better action slashers out there, but this one fits really pretty well into pocket-sized gaming sessions.
