Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best. And that’s definitely the case with Numsol (download from the App Store). It takes the shape of classic solitaire card game patience, wraps it around the numerical-doubling of 2048 and comes up with a pretty darn addictive end result.

Every game you’ve got a bunch of cards. These cards have numbers between 2 and 1024 on them, in multiples of two. Put a 2 on a 2 and you end up with a 4. 4 on a 4 you get an 8 and so on.

The aim of the game is to end up with one card with 2048 on it. Or a couple, depending on which difficulty setting you’re playing on. On the easiest setting all of the cards are the same colour, but as things get tougher you’ll need to match hues as well as numbers.

Counting to Sol

You can only move cards to make a match or to shift them onto a pile with a higher number at the bottom. There’s a line at the bottom that’s the end of the play area – you can’t move a stack if the last card crosses the line. Once you’ve moved all the cards out of a column, it’s blocked, meaning you can’t put any cards on it.

You’re not going to win every game you play, but that just makes the compulsion to push on and succeed all the stronger. Games don’t last more than a few minutes, which makes them perfect for snatching a quick go on the bus or in the bathroom.

Numsol is one of those perfect mobile puzzlers that scratches your head-scratching itches in all of the right ways. It’s not going to change the way you think about the world or anything like that, but it’ll keep you pleasantly entertained for a good long while.
